Terezín diaries in project teaching

This Diploma thesis deals with the use of diaries from the Terezín Ghetto in project teaching. Their use should be made through a series of worksheets designed for project teaching. The benefits and success of worksheets were tested on several groups of elementary and secondary schools. The first chapter is devoted to theoretical introduction to the issue of projects and project-based teaching, the following chapter discusses the history of Terezín, the third chapter deals with the Terezín diaries and their authors, in the fourth chapter are placed excerpts of diaries with the relevant historical context. Into the last chapter are included worksheets created on the basis of excerpts from the diaries, their solutions and evaluation for their success by students. The last pages are devoted to the work attachment list and a list of references and online resources. The work demonstrates that diaries are a good source for creating worksheets about everyday life in the Terezín Ghetto and that they bring to learning new ways of work and wider view of the issues being discussed.
Unconquered Yet Defeated. Fortress Towns of Bohemia and Moravia in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866

Authors of the essay have attempted, based on ego-documents, to reveal the borderlines of the discrepancy between the expected standard of intensity and duration of the Austro-Prussian conflict and the subsequent reality. One of the 19th-century mnodernizing processes condensed in the short and intense clash in the summer of 1866 when in consequence of increased density of the traffic infrastructure and the introduction of new communication and infrastructure networks, the world seemed „smaller“ and „faster“. The essay brings an analysis of the period discrourse that the autohors understand not only as a frame within which memories and events were performed, but also as a poduct of mnemonic processes.
The destinies of the Jewish population during the transports from Ostrava in 1939-1945

The bachelor thesis deals with a regional-historical topic in connection with the Jewish transports from Ostrava in 1939-1945. The main aim of the thesis is to analyse selected testimonies of the survivors of the transports, the process of these deportations and to provide a missing insight into this region-specific and historical phenomenon. Above all, emphasis is placed on a neglected chapter of history, i.e. the very first transport of European Jews, which departed from the Ostrava railway station in 1939. And then the work deals with the transports to the Terezín ghetto between 1942 and 1945. A combination of classical identification of the subject matter using academic literature and recorded audio-visual interviews is used for this examination and subsequent comparison, drawing on the contents of the historical visual archive supported by the USC Shoah Foundation, thanks to access from the Malach Center for Visual History.
Possibilities of sustainable development of the region in connection with Dark tourism

The importance of history, awareness of the horrors perpetrated on human lives, respect and sense of belonging. On the other hand, the commercialization of tragedies, moral irresponsibility or the sale of tasteless souvenirs in places with deep piety. All this characterizes Dark tourism. The aim of the diploma thesis was to analyze three selected areas of dark tourism in the Czech Republic: the Terezín concentration camp, the burned down villages of Lidice and Ležáky and the Orthodox Church of St. Cyril and Methodius in Prague. The purpose of the case study was to elaborate the individual pillars of sustainable development - economic, environmental, social and cultural. The SWOT analysis was used to evaluate the information obtained from the individual pillars analysis. Furthermore, the method of semi-structured interviews was used, which served to understand the issue and to clarify the SWOT analysis.
Remembering Terezín Through Music

Summary: This thesis focuses on a theme of musical remembrance of Terezín. It is an empirical, ethnomusicological field research. At its centre is František Tichý, headmaster of the Gymnázium Přírodní škola. I focuse on an analysis of his pedagogical, literary and dramatic activities, which I examine in the context of musical remembrance of Terezín. The aim of this research is to describe, analyze and to interpret by means of participating observation and semi-structured interviews: 1) How does the negotiation and production of performances take place, where František Tichý acts as a playwrighter, dramatist, director and musical dramatist in cooperation with his colleagues and pupils? 2) How does Frantisek Tichý contextualize and use music in the school projects of Gymnázium Přírodní škola? 3) How do these projects affect the construction of ideas about Terezín's history? Is there an alternative narrative generated by the use of artworks by Terezín authors, in which (above all) music becomes a means of remembering? In this research, I primarily follow the ethnomusicologist Zuzana Jurková, who focuses on remembrance as part of her research at the Faculty of Humanities. The thesis, The testimony of the people who survived the Holocaust, is based on the authentic testimony of the Jews who were sent to concentration camps during the 2nd World War, their lifes before the war and after the war are also presented in this thesis.Furthemore, the thesis discribes the impact of this experience on their present lives.
Spiritual and cultural life in the Terezin ghetto 1941-1945

This disertation is entiteled by "Spiritual and cultural life in the Terezin ghetto 1941 - 1945". The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first part persues to a short introduction of a historical context which lead to formation of the ghetto. The next chapter deals with the Terezin ghetto. There is mentioned a few curcumstances of creation of it, living conditions, which were in it and also a nazi propaganda. The third part is followed up with the spitirual life in ghetto, how it all had been practised and there is also an effort to define a meaning of the spiritual life for people in the ghetto. The last chapter deals with the cultural life, which were developed in the Terezin ghetto. There is described how the cultural life in Terezin had started and also the greatest pieces of art, which were created on a ground of the ghetto. The chosed metodology for this disertation is an analyse of documentations which are preserved after survivors and then the analyse of professional literature which were written about a topic of this thesis.
Slovak Jews in Theresienstadt, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen, 1944/1945

The dissertation focuses on the fates of some 5 000 men, women and children of mostly Jewish descent who were deported by German Nazi authorities from the occupied Slovak State into the Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück, Bergen-Belsen and Theresienstadt concentration camps in the period ranging from November 1944 to the end of March 1945. The main objectives of the dissertation include the establishment of the number and identity of the deportees, the circumstances of their arrest, deportation, imprisonment and liberation as well as the causes of survival, or death, of the victims of racial persecution during the German occupation of Slovakia. Based on a comparative and content analysis of the available archival sources, oral and written testimonies by survivors and, to a limited extent, of secondary literature, the writer attempts to explain the conduct of the perpetrators and victims as well as the general historical context of the deportation and imprisonment of Slovak Jews by the Nazi regime. Based on an analysis of documents related to the anti-Jewish measures taken by the Nazi security apparatus in Slovakia with the assistance of local collaborators, more general conclusions are made with regard to the development of the Nazi "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" in the German Reich and the...
